Initially, when Regulation (EC) Nº 258/1997 of 27 January 1997 was adopted, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were included in the scope of application of regulations on novel foods. However, since Regulation (EC) no. 1829/2003 of 22 September 2003 on genetically modified foods and feeds took effect (18th April 2004), genetically modified foods are outside the scope of application of Regulation 258/1997.
