Therefore, the Catalogue of Novel Food is not a complete list. It contains a list of products of plant and animal origin, plus other substances which have been discussed in relation to its status solely within the sphere of the Regulation on Novel Food.

The "Catalogue of Novel Food" can only provide guidance on whether a product requires authorisation under the Regulation on Novel Food". However, in some Member States selling the product as food or a food ingredient may be restricted by specific legislation.

On occasions, the document also contains information on the record of use in Member States as food complements or as ingredients used only in food complements. Food complements are the subject of Directive 2002/46/CE of the European Parliament and the Council on harmonising legislation in Member States on food complements. If the food and/or food ingredients have been used only in food complements, new uses presumably require authorisation under the Regulation for Novel Food.

The information to correct the "Catalogue of Novel Food", especially information on the record of significant use of a food or a food ingredient must be presented to the authorities of the member state, in particular, for checking.
