Royal Decree 930/1992 17 July, currently regulates labelling relating to nutritional properties of food products. The royal decree defines labelling of nutritional properties as "all information appearing on the label relating to: the energy value, and the following nutrients: Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats, Alimentary fibre, Sodium and vitamins and mineral salts listed in the annex", and is generally voluntary, unless the labels, presentation and publicity for the food mentions that the product has special nutritional or health properties.

INFORMATION MODALITIES FOR LABELLING NUTRITIONAL PROPERTIES

When labelling the nutritional properties, the information that must be provided must belong to either group 1 or group 2 (described below) and will follow the order below:

1.    Group 1.

            Energy value.

            Quantity of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

2.    Group 2.

            Energy value.

            Quantity of proteins, carbohydrates, sugars, fats, saturated acids, alimentary fibre and sodium.

When nutritional properties are declared of sugars, saturated fatty acids, alimentary fibre or sodium, the information provided corresponds to group 2.

The information must be given per 100 g or per 100 ml. It can also be per portion, provided that the number of portions is given on the packaging.

Information on vitamins and mineral salts must also be given as a percentage of the recommended daily amount (RDA), and given in the annex of the Royal Decree.

The information must be grouped in the same place, in table form and, if there is space, with numbers in a column. If space is limited, they can be in a line.
