Nutrient ProfilesIn pursuance of the aim of ensuring consumer protection, also to ensure that the consumer chooses the healthiest option among various foodstuffs on sale, Regulation No 1924/2006 also lays down the conditions to be complied with in the nutritional and health claims for food.
More specifically, article 4 of the regulation, stipulates that one of the requisites for food to make a claim for nutrition or health properties is that they must comply with the nutrient profiles adopted by the Commission.
In drawing up nutrient profiles, the Commission based itself on the opinion given by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which can be consulted on EFSA's web page, or by direct access from the links below:
In addition, the latest version of the working document on setting nutrient profiles (13 February) is available, drawn up by the Commission and based on EFSA's opinion above, after consultation with all interested parties.
However, until the document has been approved by the Standing Committee for the Food Chain and Animal Health (general food legislation section), by the European Union Commission, the text has no legal validity.
