The Secretary General for Health and Consumer Affairs, Pilar Farjas, today opened the Conference organised by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition on the Regulation (EU) No 432/2012.

On 25 May Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, of 16 May 2012, was published in the Official Journal of the European Union, laying down a list of permitted health claims made on foods other than those referring to the reduction of disease risk and to children’s development and health.

The publication of this list was the result of a great amount of effort, after the economic operators had presented different applications for assessment.

Pilar Farjas, has shown that with the publication of the community list and the tools at our disposal, together, all of those of us involved in this area, can achieve a market in which the information labels on food products generates greater trust amongst consumers.

The Conference covered the application and novelties introduced by this Regulation.

However these challenges do not end with the publication of the Regulation, which shall apply from 14 December 2012.

Representatives from the Public Administration, Industry, Consumer Associations and the European Commission spoke at the Conference.

It covered the novelties introduced with the publication of Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, of 16 May 2012.

  • The community list of health claims authorised under the scope of Article 13.1 of Regulation (EC) 1924/2006.
  • The current situation of pending health claims under the scope of Article 13.1 and future work to be undertaken.
  • The application assessment process under Article 13.1.
  • The opinion of consumers and industry concerning the new Regulation.
  • Illustrate the application in the practice of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006.

The Deputy Directorate of Risk Management, directed by Rosa Sanchidrián, was responsible for presenting the developed programme.

More than 250 professionals from all the producing sectors attended the Conference which was held in the Salon Ernest Lluch belonging to the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.
