The Madrid based Official Pharmacist Association, together with the Official Veterinarian Association, yesterday presented a lecture titled “Food Supplements and their Regulation in Europe”, given by Ana Troncoso, Executive Director of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (ASEAN).

During the month of March 2010, Spain hosted the international conference “Food Supplement Workshop”, the main object of which was to take a first step towards harmonising non-regulated criteria relating to Directive 2002/46/EC on food supplements. AESAN played an active role in establishing the need for harmonisation in such cases.

At this conference, Ana Troncoso gave a broad outline of the current situation with regard to food supplements within the framework of the European Union, even giving examples to clarify the different situations arising in the marketing of these products and pointing out the need to establish harmonisation criteria on a European level.

There was a review of the conclusions reached following the International Workshop held in Madrid on 8 March, 2009, which had a great impact and was attended by representatives from 22 Member States, which gives some idea of the current level of concern with regard to this issue.

Below are the Conclusions of the International Workshop held in Madrid on 8 March, 2010.
