Annual Report 2010

We will publish the AESAN Report 2010 once it has been approved by the management board of the Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Agency. To make the reading of this year’s report and the use of the screen easier we have introduced several innovations that in our opinion improve browsing since it has interactive pointers, one general and another pertinent to each of the chapters, thereby directing readers and helping them to find information of their interest while guiding them from the general to the particular, as well as links that go from each page to the pointer pertinent to its chapter or section. No doubt, these additions will contribute to making it easier to understand the document. As each year, this year we also thank the Autonomous Regions and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla for their close collaboration in providing the pertinent data.

Another year the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) publishes its report, a commitment included in the regulations, and which annually serves as a incentive for AESAN in its work of analysis and collection, which facilitates knowledge on all activities that are conducted, through the release and dissemination of this work, for which we have of course the invaluable collaboration of the Autonomous Communities concerning the data supply.

In this report, all the same as in the ones related to previous periods, a detailed description is given of each of the actions taken by the Agency and it shows the evolution of different aggregate data that will undoubtedly enrich the story of the various activities undertaken, thus allowing a structured view of the several areas that it is comprised of. The fact that the annual report is always one of the most accessed files, shows its great importance as bibliographic and documentary tool to study the development and evolution of the institutions.

The year 2007 has been for the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition an extremely productive year and full of projects. It has also been a year of renovation, with the innovative integration of Nutrition to its name and functions. The Law 44/2006 of December 29th, improving the Protection of Consumers and Users, in its eighth additional provision, it is assigned the function to "plan, coordinate and develop strategies and actions to promote information, education and promotion of health in the field of nutrition and in particular the prevention of obesity”.

This autonomous body, began 2006 as the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and ended it with the parliamentary mandate to include in its functions the promotion of health in the field of nutrition and so becoming the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN). These new responsibilities are an expression of public health policy that the Ministry of Health is relaunching strongly in this term and is widely recognized as the most efficient way to improve the expectancy and quality of life for as many citizens as possible.

It is structured in four main areas. 1). More control, more safety: where the activity meets the three general branches, the work of the Scientific Committee and the National Food Centre and the National Reference Laboratory for Marine Biotoxins in Vigo. 2) More information: where the communication activities developed by the Agency is collected. It should be noted here that in 2005 the Journal of the Scientific Committee of AESAN was launched. 3) Healthier Food: new section that compiles all activities related to the NAOS Strategy. 4) Better management, more protection: where the AESAN economic data is specified.

The year 2004 has been, from the viewpoint of food security, the full consolidation of the Agency as an institution. It is no exaggeration to say that in some ways we occupy a leading position among our neighbouring countries. In this regard, during 2004, we prepared the NAOS Strategy, which will come into cruising speed from 2005. In 2004, the protection of citizens has been extended as well as the management and dissemination of information to which they are entitled. From the Community level it is worth recalling the entry into force of regulations and 2003/1829/CE on genetically modified food and feed and its traceability and labelling.

Memoria Anual 2003

In this second year we have coined what will be a working style, a philosophy in which we all want to see ourselves reflected: transparency, access and collaboration with those who have something to say and a lot to do in food security, agile and open management, use of our mandate to provide platforms for discussion on food safety, move towards to the international scopes, gradually gain professional credibility through our actions and constantly seek the most effective way of action. We present our areas of action in four blocks: "More control, more security," "More Information", "Healthy Eating", "Better management, better protection."

This is the first Report of Activities of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety. It refers to a phase especially significant for the institution: the year in which the Agency is consolidated, creates its team and its philosophy of work, and in which all business lines are served to which the Ministry of Health and Consumption had been responding in terms of food security.
