This committee is composed by 20 members of recognized scientific competition in nine areas related with the safety of foods: Food toxicology; Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology or Food Zoonosis; Human and animal epidemiology; Biotechnology and Genetic Modification; Immunology and Allergology; Human nutrition; Pharmacology; Food Technological processes and Analysis and Instrumentation. Between the functions of the Scientific Committee they emphasize the coordination of the groups of experts who will carry out the evaluations of food risks, and that will be shaped in opinions, under the denomination of Information of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Food Safety Agency.

Ana María Cameán Fernández

Ana María Cameán Fernández

Full professor of Toxicology of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Seville

Doctor in Pharmacy earned at the University of Seville. She lectures and researches in the Department of Nutrition and Bromatology, Toxicology and Legal Medicine at the University of Seville, of which department she is director at the present time. She is the chief investigator of the group – which is considered to be a Group of Excellence – researching “Metals and organic contaminants” code CTS-358 of the Andalusian Research Plan (PAIDI) programmed by the Ministry of Innovation and Science of the regional government of Andalusia. The principal lines on which said research group and her scientific career are focussed are: research into metal levels of toxicological interest in foods, beverages and biological samples; toxins in cyanobacteria of interest in food and environmental toxicology (microcystins, cylindrospermopsins, and so forth) while addressing the analytical-toxicological aspects and the evaluation of their toxicity in vivo and in vitro, and lastly, the evaluation of the toxicity of chemical substances, contaminants and xenobiotic compounds in general, of interest in food safety.
In relation to said scientific activity she has published 180 scientific works, of which 80 were published in science journals with a citation index; she has addressed 160 national and international congresses, she has made two patent applications, written several book chapters,  has been co-editor of 10 books on Toxicology, and has directed 8 doctoral theses. She has taken part in and directed numerous research projects. With respect to offices of responsibility held, she has been vice dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Seville, elected member of the managing board of the Spanish Association of Toxicology, and at the present time, she is president of the Food Safety Department of said association.

Alberto Cepeda Sáez

Alberto Cepeda Sáez

Full professor of Nutrition and Bromatology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela

Doctor in Pharmacy earned at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He is the director of the Chemical Analysis, Nutrition and Bromatology Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of said university and a corresponding member of the Academy of Pharmacy of Galicia.
The principal lines along which he has worked over his career are: research into veterinary drug residues in animal-derived foods, research into toxicogenic and mycotoxin fungi in animal-derived foods, the application of PCR in the verification of animal-derived foods and research into natural preservatives present in foods. In relation to these fields, he has taken part in 40 national and international research projects, he has published some 170 scientific studies, he has contributed over 130 papers and reports to national and international congresses and he has directed 18 doctoral theses. He has worked in foreign research centres including the Chimie Analytique II Laboratory of the University of Paris Sud where he deepened his knowledge of bioluminescence, applied phosphorescence and mycotoxins.

Mariano Domingo Álvarez

Full professor of Animal Health at the University Autónoma of Barcelona. Director of CRESA (Animal Health Research Centre)

Doctor in Veterinary Medicine earned at Zaragoza University and degree in Veterinary Pathology. At the present time, he is the director of the Animal Health Research Foundation. (CRESA).
His lines of research focus on the diagnosis and control of diseases in domestic farm species and the identification of risk at the commencement of the food chain. He has taken part in over 20 research projects (national and international) in the fields of animal health, immunology and epidemiology, and has directed 11 doctoral theses. He has 140 publications to his credit and 11 books and book chapters. In addition, within this context, he is a member of the Animal Health and Welfare Panel of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and has collaborated with the Catalonian Food Safety Authority.
He has taken part in the immunology working group of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) and he is a member of the European Society of Veterinary Pathology (ESVP) and co-founder of the Spanish Society of Veterinary Pathology. He forms part of the editing board of the Journal of Veterinary Pathology.

Rosaura Farré Rovira

Rosaura Farré Rovira

President of the Spanish Nutrition Society (SEN)

Doctor in Pharmacy earned at the University of Barcelona. She is a retired full professor of Nutrition and Bromatology of the University of Valencia.
At the present time, she is: president of the Spanish Nutrition Society; member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Food Safety and Nutrition Authority (AESAN); member of the Advisory Council of the Valenican Foundation of Advanced Studies (FVEA), and corresponding member of the Catalonian Royal Academy of Pharmacy.
Her lines of research focus on mineral bioavailability, modifications in foods consequent on technological and/or storage treatments, enzymatic browning and lipid oxidation, and the evaluation of the nutritional state of different groups of the population. She has to her credit over 200 publications in national and international journals in the field of Food Science and numerous participations in research projects, and she has directed 33 doctoral theses. 

Antonio Herrera Marteache

Antonio Herrera Marteache

Full professor of Nutrition and Bromatology at the University of Zaragoza

Doctor in Veterinary Medicine earned at the University of Cordoba. He is a member of the Food Safety Authority of Aragón, of whose Scientific Committee he has been vice-president, and he is an external consultant of the Advisory Committee for Food Safety of the regional government of Aragón.
In respect of the lines of investigation that he has developed in the field of food safety and hygiene, worthy of special mention are the evaluation of risks in foods due to abiotic contaminant residues and estimation of the daily intake of these contaminants (antibiotics, insecticides, polychlorinated biphenals, dioxins, and other food contaminants) in different population groups; the study of biotic agents of special public health interest in foods (emerging microorganisms, Salmonella, E.coli, listeria and toxoplasma) by the improvement and adaptation of isolating techniques, the identification and evaluation of pathogenicity and the analysis of  antibiotic resistant populations present in foods; the study of the presence, evaluation and prevention of risks from mycotoxins in foods (aflatoxins, ochratoxins fumonisins and other mycotoxins),  as well as research projects directed at tuning up analytical methods for the testing of biotic and abiotic contaminants in complex food matrices. With respect to his research activities, he has taken part in 30 research projects and has directed 17 doctoral theses while he has also been co-author of over 150 scientific articles published in international journals.
He has been dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zaragoza (1992-1998), vice-chancellor of Academic Planning at the University of Zaragoza (2000-2008) and a member of the Research Advisory Council of the regional government of Aragón (1998-2009).

Félix Lorente Toledano

Full professor of Paediatrics at the University of Salamanca

With a doctor in Medicine earned at the University of Salamanca, he is head of the Allergology Department at the university hospital of Salamanca.
Among his principal lines of research that deserve special mention are: the study of primary immunodeficiencies; the exploration of phagocytes and humoral factors of non-specific immunodeficiencies; immunology of the new born and evolution of complement levels over the first year; evaluation of the immune system in patients with Down’s Syndrome; hymenoptera venom allergy; immunotherapy; aeropalinological and aereomycoligical studies; food allergies; atopical dermatitis in children; allergy to beta-lactam; neural networks; proteomics applied to immunotherapy; early diagnosis of allergic children, and  genetics and epigenetics of allergies and asthma. Within these research activities he has taken part in 28 research projects, he has directed 21 doctoral theses, and has written over 215 publications (56 of which were book chapters). He is a member of the editorial committee of the Spanish Journal of Paediatrics, president of the Paediatrics Society of Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla y León and a member of the managing board of the Spanish Paediatrics Association.

Full professor of Nutrition and Bromatology at the Pablo Olavide University of Seville

Doctor in Medicine and Surgery earned at the University of Seville. He is the director of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemical Engineering of the Pablo Olavide University. His interest in research has focussed on the molecular, metabolic and pathological aspects of the regulation of the secretion of insulin and the expression of genes induced by nutrients. In relation to these aspects, he has published some 70 scientific studies, he has taken part in 45 research projects, he has contributed with papers and reports in 59 national and international congresses and has directed 9 doctoral theses.
Over the last 20 years, he has lectured undergraduates in the fields relating to biochemistry and molecular biology, physiology and nutrition, and bromatology. These lectures were given to students of Medicine, Nursing, Biology, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Oenology, Food Science and Technology, Pharmacy, Human Nutrition and Dietetics at the Universities Pablo Olavide in Seville and Miguel Hernández in Alicante. With respect to post-graduate courses, he has taken part in doctorate, masters and university expert programmes at the Universities of Alicante, Miguel Hernández, Pompeu Fabra, Granada, Barcelona, Santiago de Chile and the Nacional Autónoma of Mexico.

María Rosario Martín de Santos

María Rosario Martín de Santos

Full professor of Nutrition and Bromatology at the Complutense University of Madrid  

Doctor in Veterinary Medicine earned at the Complutense University of Madrid. She is a joint director of the group researching the development of advanced traceability methods, the detection of micro-organisms and bio-safety of foods in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid.
With respect to her research experience in the field of food safety, her principal lines of work focus on the detection and rapid enumeration of micro-organisms of hygiene-health care interest and their metabolites in foods through genetic and immunological techniques as well as the identification of animal and vegetable species in foods and feeds (meat/meat products, milk/milk products, fish/shellfish, cereals/dry fruits) by genetic techniques (PCR and real time PCR) and immunological techniques (polyclonal, monoclonal and ELISA antibodies).
Her research career is embodied in her participation in or direction of research projects financed by the autonomous region of Madrid, the central government or internationally. She has published 130 scientific articles in international journals of renowned prestige (JCR), has written 75 articles of dissemination and has been a joint director of 19 doctoral theses. She has been a member of the managing board of the Biotechnology Innovation Association of the Autonomous Region of Madrid and she is a member of the Innovation Advisory Board of the Scientific Park Foundation (Fundación Parque Científico) of Madrid.

Emilio Martínez de Victoria Muñoz

Emilio Martínez de Victoria Muñoz

Full professor of Physiology at the University of Granada

Degree in Biology and Doctor in Physiology earned at the University of Granada. He is the director of the Nutrition and Food Technology Institute (INYTA) of the University of Granada. He lectures at the School of Nutrition of the University of Granada. He is the academic coordinator of the Masters in Clinical Nutrition. He is the founding academician and fellow of the Spanish Nutrition and Food Science Academy. His experience and research activity encompass the fields of nutrition and health, cellular and molecular bases, nutrition and obesity, data bases on composition of foods and nutritional evaluation of groups and populations (intake of foods and nutrients). He has developed software for use in nutritional evaluation and epidemiology. He has taken part in over 30 national and international research projects and has to his credit over 100 articles published in scientific journals. He has published over 40 books and book chapters and directed 15 doctoral theses. He is a co-author of the study on the Nutritional State of the Population of the Autonomous Region of Andalusia. He is the coordinator of the University of Granada (UGR) of the European Network of Excellence, EuroFIR, for establishing European standards in data bases and a member of the Spanish network, BEDCA for the compilation of the Spanish data base on the nutritional composition of foods respectively. He is a participant in the CENIT PRONAOS project on the development of foods for the prevention of obesity; a participant in the Bioactive Compound Network; the coordinator of the INYTA (Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology) Group in the Ibero-American Programme for Science, Technology and Development (CYTED) on Malnutrition in Ibero-America. He is a member of the coordinating group of the CIVIN project (International Virtual Nutrition Research Centre (AECID) (The Spanish international cooperation for development agency). He is an advisor of the National Total Diet Study (AESAN); an expert in animal experimentation, and a member of the scientific committee of the European Journal of Nutrition. He is a member of the managing board of the SENC (The Spanish Neuroscience Society); a member of the SENPE (The Spanish Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Society); an expert of the ANEP (National Evaluation Agency of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation) for the evaluation of MEC and FIS research projects, and an expert in animal protection and experimentation.    

María Rosa Martínez-Larrañaga

María Rosa Martínez-Larrañaga

Full professor of Toxicology at the Complutense University of Madrid

With a doctor in Chemical Sciences and degree in Pharmacy earned at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), she is an associate member of the European College for Veterinary Pharmacology (ECVPT) and the director of the Department of Toxicology and Pharmacology of the UCM. She has been a researcher of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), as well as secretary and deputy director of the Centre of Pharmacology and Toxicology (CSIC-UCM).
From the outset of her teaching and research career she has taught and researched in the field of toxicology and pharmacology, particularly in the area of food toxicology. Within the field of food safety and nutrition, her principal lines of research focus on molecular and experimental toxicology; toxicokinetics/pharmacokinetics (including metabolism), neurotoxicity and neuroprotection in the evaluation of the toxicological risk of contaminants and residues from compound abiotics and biotics.  As part of her research work, she has directed 21 doctoral theses and 28 end-of-masters advanced works and studies. She has taken part in over 30 research projects (national and international) and she has published over 270 articles in foreign journals, indexed in the JCR with a high impact factor in her field.  She has researched as a visiting research fellow in foreign institutions, such as the University of Toulouse (France), the Medical Research Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London (England), and the Complutense Royal College of the University of Harvard (U.S.A.).

Antonio Martínez López

Research professor with the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC)

Doctor in Biological Sciences. Deputy director of the Agro-chemical and Food Technology Institute (IATA) and was a member of the Panel of Experts in Biological Risks (BIOHAZ) of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) from May 2003 until May 2009, forming an active part of different working groups.
His career has been related to the evaluation of microbiological and non-microbiological risks and their implications in the production of innocuous foods, his principal lines of research being: the evaluation of the preservation conditions of foods and the principal factors that could be involved in the death/survival and growth of pathogenic micro-organisms (Salmonella, L. monocytoges, Clostridium botulinum, Bacillus cereus); studies to evaluate the impact of the emerging new technologies in food safety (focussing on the study of the possibility of conversions or changes in the virulence of vegetative cells of E. coli, L. monocytogenes and Salmonella); the development of Time-Temperature Indicators to evaluate the safety and the effectiveness of heat sterilization processes; the acquisition of experimental data as the fundamental cornerstone for the development of predictive models and the development of new alternative models (stochastic models) applicable in the evaluation of exposure by Monte Carlo simulation both in an industrial-level risk evaluation system and in food safety managers.
In this respect worthy of note are his participation in over 30 research projects both national and of the different programmes within the framework of the European Union, he is co-author of over 110 publications and he has directed 11 doctoral theses. He has been the coordinator of different thematic networks: Ibero-American network on health quality of foods (RICSA) of the Ibero-American Programme for Science, Technology and Development (CYTED) and the Spanish food safety network (SICURA); at the present time, he coordinates the food safety group of the European Technological Platform, Food for Life, Spain.

Cristina Nerín de la Puerta

Full professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Zaragoza

Doctor in Analytical Chemistry earned at the University of Zaragoza. At the present time, she works in the Analytical Chemistry Department of the Polytechnic School of the University of Zaragoza.
The main lines of research on which she has based her work are: the development of analytical methods for studies on the interaction between packaging and food (polymers, paper and cardboard, recycled materials, high temperature applications, and so forth); migration studies; the development and study of new antioxidant, anti-microbial and aroma active packaging; analytical methods for the study of residue treatment processes (oils, purines, pyrolysis, combustion, dry residues, cavitation, and so forth); analytical methods for conducting environmental and contaminant studies: PCBs, heavy metals, PAHs, organochlorides, insecticides, volatile organic compounds, and so forth, in air, water, sediments, soils, residues and biota. In this respect, she is a member of the recycling working group of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), in the panel of Food Contact materials, flavourings and enzymes.
She is the author of over 200 scientific publications, many of which are related to foods, food contamination, food packaging, and so forth; she has taken part in over 150 research- development- and innovation projects, over 15 of which were international and she has been director of 27 doctoral theses. She is the inventor of 4 international patents, three of which concern active packaging and one, intelligent packaging. She has been a member of the panel of experts (EC, BCR–DG XII) for the certification of organochloride insecticide samples and for the specification of organometals of lead, and assessor of VII EU framework programme. 

Teresa Ortega

Vice-president of the Phytotherapy Research Institute (INFITO)

With a doctor in Pharmacy earned at the Complutense University of Madrid, she is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Pharmacy at this university. She pursues her teaching and research activities in the field of herbal plants. Her research is focussed primarily on the study of pharmacological actions of plants for use in traditional Spanish and Ibero-American medicines, the essential objective of which is the scientific validation of their therapeutic efficacy.
She has stayed at different centres, worthy of special mention being her stay at the Centre de Recherche sur l'Aromatisation of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Nantes, during which time she amplified her knowledge on the extraction and analysis of essential oils. She is a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of the Latin Mediterranean, of the Spanish Society of Pharmacognosy and of the Spanish Phytotherapy Society (SEFIT).

Associate professor in the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Nutrition and Bromatology of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Santiago de Compostela

Doctor in Pharmacy earned at the University of Santiago de Compostela. At the present time, she is the secretary of said faculty in which she has been lecturing full time on a continual basis for 35 years.
Over her professional and teaching career, her research activity has focussed on the food safety of materials coming into contact with foods, and to be more precise, the development of analytical methods, plastic materials and coatings, migrants in foods, simulants and systems of active, intelligent packaging as well as recycled materials. In relation to these fields, she has taken part in 23 research projects, she has to her credit some 140 publications in prestigious journals, she has contributed to national and international congresses with some 100 papers and reports, and has directed 17 doctoral theses.

She is also an assessor of research projects and articles for numerous journals, and she has been an expert on the ad hoc group on coating of the Committee of experts on material coming into contact with food of the Council of Europe.      

Catalina Picó Segura

Catalina Picó Segura

Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Deputy director of the General Molecular Biology, Nutrition and Biotechnology Laboratory of the University of the Balearic Islands        

Doctor in Biology earned at the University of the Balearic Islands. She is qualified to be a full university professor.    
The research activity that she has developed at the University of the Balearic Islands, since 1988, is related to the system of body weight regulation (obesity), including perinatal (epigenetic) programming mechanisms, the relationship between diet and genetics (Nutrigenomics and Personalised Nutrition), and the diet/illness mechanisms in relation to food safety and efficacy. In this respect, worthy of special mention is her participation in the NuGO, the European research network of excellence into Nutrigenomics, comprising 22 European groups, in which she has lead one of its four research platforms engaged in the risk/benefit analysis of nutrients and food components. She is also a member (vice-president) of the team that coordinates the European project BIOCLAIMS, which addresses the development of new scientific principles based primarily on nutrigenomics in order to substantiate future health claims made about foods, and a researcher with the CIBER (online biomedical research centre of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation) into the physiopathology of obesity and nutrition (CIBERobn) since 2006.
She has taken part in over 40 national and international research projects, directed 5 doctoral theses and published over 80 articles on nutrition-related research in international scientific journals with a citation index, 2 books and 16 book chapters.

Rosa María Pintó Solé

Rosa María Pintó Solé

Associate professor in the Microbiology Department of the University of Barcelona

Doctor in Biology earned at the University of Barcelona. She is a member of the CEN TAG4 Committee of the European Union for the standardisation of molecular techniques for the detection of virus in foodstuffs. Her experience in food safety, particularly in safety from foodborne viruses has been supported by a research career of over twenty years in the field of enteric viruses. Said career has focussed on the research into basic aspects of the molecular biology of the hepatitis A virus and astrovirus as well as on the molecular epidemiology of the hepatitis A virus, astrovirus and calicivirus. Her experience in basic research has enabled her to apply this research to developing molecular methods for the diagnosis and quantification of enteric viruses in different types of matrices, including food matrices. She has also done research work on methods of inactivating viruses, virucidal agents and viral diseases of fish. She has taken part in research projects subsidised by public national and international funds, she has directed 8 doctoral theses and has to her credit over 100 international publications.
She has complemented her training in the Institute of Aquaculture of Torre de la Sal - CSIC, Castellón and in the Institute of Virology and Environmental Microbiology of Oxford in the United Kingdom.               

Antonio Pla Martínez

Antonio Pla Martínez

Full professor of Toxicology at the University of Granada

Doctor in Pharmacy and Degree in Biological Sciences earned at the University of Granada. Specialist with the Public Healthcare Service of Andalusia. At the present time, he pursues his teaching and research activities in the Department of Legal Medicine, Toxicology and Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada, in which he occupies the post of director of the Departmental Toxicology Section. With respect to his medical care work he is head of the Toxicological Analysis Service at the university hospital of Cecilio de Granada.
Over the last 30 years he has lectured on Toxicology in the undergraduate degree courses of Medicine, Pharmacy and Food Technology (food toxicology and residues of medicines in foods) and Environmental Sciences. In respect of post-graduate lecturing, he has taken part in Doctor, Masters and University Expert Programmes at the University of Granada, Escuela Andaluza de Salud Pública and other Spanish universities, much of which were related to risk evaluation. He also takes part in the training of Clinical Analysis interns (doctors and pharmacists - MIR-FIR) at the university hospital of San Cecilio de Granada.
The principal lines on which he has developed his research activity are: insecticide toxicity, exposure of the population to heavy metals, toxicity biomarkers and the study of chemical contaminants (inorganic/organic) in fish products. In relation to said scientific activity he has taken part in 17 research projects, has published over 60 scientific articles and numerous book chapters on toxicology, he has directed 8 doctoral theses and has to his credit numerous contributions to national and international congresses of his specialist field.          
He has taken part in different expert committees related to risk evaluation. Thus he is a member of the expert advisory committee on the effects on health of insecticides in the province of Almeria, within the Programme of Special Monitoring of Acute Intoxications by Insecticides of the regional government of Andalusia. He has been a member of the advisory committee and the group controlling and providing healthcare follow-up in the areas affected by the collapse of the settling basin in the mines of Aznalcóllar. He is a member of the scientific committee in support of the detection of contaminants in foodstuffs plan of the regional government of Andalusia. He was a member elected to the managing board of the Spanish Toxicology Association from 1997 to 2005, forming part during said period of the editorial committee of the Spanish Toxicology Journal and of the scientific committee of said association. At the present time, he is a member of the food safety scientific committee of the Basque Food Safety Foundation (ELIKA).

Daniel Ramón Vidal

Research professor at the Institute of Agro-Chemistry and Food Technology of the Higher Council for Scientific Research

With a degree and doctor in Biological Sciences earned at the University of Valencia, he is a member of the scientific committee of the PríncipeFelipe Museum of Sciences of Valencia and a member of the National Commission of Biomonitoring. The main lines of research on which he has based his work are: food biotechnology, microbial biotechnology and the production and validation of functional food ingredients. In relation to these fields, he has taken part in 37 research projects, has some 230 scientific publications to his credit, has taken part with reports or papers in 152 national and international congresses and has directed 11 doctoral theses. In addition, to amplify his knowledge of Microbiology, he has had several stays in the Section of Industrial Micro-organisms of the Genetics Department of the University of Agriculture of Wageningen (The Netherlands).
He has also been deputy director and director of the Institute of Agro-Chemistry and Food Technology, full professor of Food Technology in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Valencia and corresponding academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Murcia.

Jordi Salas-Salvadó

Full professor of Nutrition and Bromatology at the University Universidad Rovira iVirgili

Doctor in Medicine and Surgery earned at the University of Barcelona. He is the director of the Human Nutrition Department of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Reus of the University Rovira i Virgili and clinical head of the Nutrition Department of Internal Medicine of the university hospital, Sant Joan de Reus.
His research activity focuses on the study of obesity, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome as well as the effect of functional ingredients, foods and diet on obesity, different vascular risk factors, inflammation and oxidation processes. In this respect, he directs a research group belonging to CIBERobn and the PREDIMED networks of the Carlos III Institute.
He has taken part in over 45 research projects and directed 12 doctoral theses. In recent years he has published 77 original articles and 28 reviews in indexed journals and has edited 5 books. He has also conducted different clinical trials on humans in order to demonstrate the importance of diet in the prevention of obesity, diabetes, the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.
He is the president of the Spanish Federation of Societies for Nutrition, Food and Dietetics (FESNAD) and the director of the Catalonian Nutrition Centre of the Institute of Catalonian Studies (CCNIEC).

Full professor of Nutrition and Bromatology of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Barcelona        

With a doctor in pharmacy earned at the University of Barcelona, she is the head of studies of the Food Science and Technology Degree course, the secretary of the Nutrition and Food Safety Institute (INSA) of the University of Barcelona, vice-president of the Spanish Food Safety Society (SESAL) and a member of the group of experts on food allergies and intolerances of the Catalonian Food Safety Authority (ACSA).
Her research activity is based on the composition, nutritive value and safety of foods, especially biologically active amines and polyamines with over 100 articles published in prestigious journals and over 100 reports in international congresses. She has also published over 50 articles and some 40 book chapters on the subjects of nutrition and food safety, especially interactions between foods and medicines, composition and nutritive value, functional foods and ingredients, food additives, and so forth. She has coordinated and co-written two books. This research activity has been developed in the framework of autonomous region, central government and European projects. Thus, she has been the chief investigator of 8 CIRIT projects (Interdepartmental Commission of Research and Technological Innovation of the regional government of Catalonia), 6 CICYT projects (Interdepartmental Commission of Science and Technology – on a state level), 2 European projects (Qualipoiss-FAIR-CT96 and Tradisausage-QLRT-2001), and of the consolidated research group “Bioactive amines and polyamines in foods” (SGR-00237-the regional government of Catalonia), and has directed 8 doctoral theses. She lectures in the Pharmacy and Food Technology Science degree courses and in the diploma courses of Human Nutrition and Dietetics and she is the joint director of an online master’s course on Nutrition and Food and director of the official masters in food safety, jointly given by the University Autónoma of Barcelona and the Catalonian Food Safety Authority.
